Heavy Leg Training, Engineered to Squat Seated or Shoulder-Supported
The Classic Era Hack Squat is a commercial plate-loaded leg machine with two squatting positions on a single carriage. The difference between them is the hinge.
Shoulder-supported, it is the hack squat as most athletes know it. The pads sit on the shoulders, the torso stays upright and supported, and the quads carry a deep, controlled range under direct load.
Seated, the shoulders come out of it entirely. The athlete settles back against the pad and the hips are free to travel, opening the hinge that shoulder loading restricts. Longer range through the hips, more glute and hamstring involvement, and no load pressing down through the shoulders.
Same machine. Same plates. Two ways to squat it.
Why It Feels Different
A hack squat that only loads through the shoulders only trains one shape.
With the pads on the shoulders, the torso has to stay relatively upright and the hips can only travel so far back before the position breaks down. That constraint is exactly what makes the shoulder-supported hack squat such a direct quad movement — it is a feature, not a fault. But it also means the hips never do much work, and every set stacks load down through the spine.
The seated position changes where the load is carried. With the back against the pad and the shoulders free, the hips can sit back into a genuine hinge, lengthening the glutes and hamstrings under load and extending the range at the bottom of the movement.
For an athlete with long femurs, for a training week already heavy with axial loading, or simply for a second leg movement that trains a different shape without a second machine, the seated position earns its place.
The carriage runs on hardened guide rods, so travel stays smooth and square in either position, and the platform is sized for multiple stance widths so emphasis can shift across the quads, glutes and adductors without leaving the machine.
The Two Positions
Shoulder-supported hack squat. Pads on the shoulders, torso upright. Quad-dominant, fixed path, deep stretch under direct load.
Seated hack squat. Shoulders free, back against the pad. The hips travel back into a real hinge — longer range, more glute and hamstring recruitment, and no compression through the shoulders.
